Sandals or what we normally call slippers (tsinelas in Tagalog) go a long way in our country’s rich history.
I remember an anecdote of our national hero Jose Rizal’s “banca” trip with his father along a clean Pasig River. While sailing through the river, the other half of his pair of slippers fell. Since he was a young boy then, Jose Rizal, also known for his nickname “Pepe”, threw his other slipper into the river, too.
When asked why he threw his other slipper, the young Pepe reasoned that should someone find one slipper, it would be of no use, which explains why he threw the other as well. If someone finds the other half, at least he can use it.
In our time, sandals go in various shapes and sizes. I grew up with brands like Step-in, Bantex, Rambo, Islander and today, in a more sophisticated name like Havaiianas.
But again, nothing beats the timeless beauty and tested durability of a genuine leather sandals with designs that are well-thought of by ingenious locals from Marikina.
